The Rubbermaid M38 cart line is a favorite among many clinicians. The carts have a good looking sleek design that most nurses like. The M38 line comes in a variety of configurations including laptop and desktop options as well as both non powered and multiple powered options. The powered options include fixed SLA, fixed LiFePO4, and hotswap lithium. There are also multiple storage configurations ranging from a single mechanical locking drawer to a 12 drawer electronic medication cart with powered lift. The carts come fully assembled and only need to have the IT equipment and accessories mounted. The cart has good cable management and allows for a very clean integration. The carts are easy to use for the end users including fluid motion and easy height adjustments. There are many accessory options from medication drawers to scanner holders and printer shelves. In general the cart is durable, but there are some plastic components such as the side accessory bins and rear base of the cart which is plastic and can be prone to cracking. Rubbermaid provides next day onsite service on their warranry repairs, however there are a number of items such as casters and keyboard trays which are considered customer replaceable and will be the end users responsibility to replace. Overall the Rubbermaid carts are an excellect choice for both aesthetics as well as functionality.
Rubbermaid Healthcare M38 Computer Carts combine a compact, lightweight design, and superior ergonomics, with a comprehensive set of nursing features, making it ideal for various point-of-care applications.
The M38 Mobile Computing Cart by Rubbermaid Healthcare has a sleek design that is appealing to most end users. The cart has a solid metal column and technology tray, but the work surface, base, and the majority of accessory components are plastic which is more susceptible to damage from wear and tear as well as abuse.
The work surface provides ample writing space and has a protective cover sheet which allows clinicians to place documents underneath for easy viewing. The work surface on the M38 cart is plastic, but not made from antimicrobial material. The work surface has a keyed lock to secure the IT equipment located in the technology compartment. The power gauge for the power system is easily visible on the work surface and clearly illustrates the current state of the battery and power status.
Underneath the work surface the M38 provides ample storage space in the technology compartment for most laptops and SFF PCs as well as their power adapters. 3 AC plugs are provided to power the devices. All cabling is routed through the column of the cart directly into the work surface so nothing is routed externally.
The M38 has a standard keyboard tray that provides both positive and negative tilt as well as height adjustability. The tray also provide extendable mouse surfaces for both the left and right sides. A keyboard light is integrated into the cart to provide illumination in low light environments.
The monitor mount system for the M38 cart allows for independent height adjustment as well as the ability to pivot and tilt. There are also multiple monitor accessory mounts available such as side mounted cup and barcode scanner holders. An under monitor LED light is available for work surface illumination as well.
The height adjustment of the cart is controlled by a lever located conveniently under the work surface. When the brake is released the channel moves smoothly. The ease of motion is controlled by a tension adjustment bolt located under the cap of the main column. This adjustment can be a little tricky to get correct for inexperienced users, but can be accomplished with a simple socket set.
The cart has a small foot print and 4 dual wheel casters that provide smooth motion over virtually all surfaces. The cart base provides easy access to the power system and batteries for easy servicing. The coiled power cord attaches to the rear of the base, but because the housing is plastic we have seen multiple cases where the receptacle can actually break the housing when an end user puts too much pressure on the connector.
The power management system is powered by a 40 AH LiFe battery. This solution provides ample runtime for most typical small form factor PC and LED monitor combinations. This version of the cart provides AC power, however Rubbermaid does offer DC models as well. Power system monitoring can be managed by utilizing the free software provided by Rubbermaid. On this version of the cart this solution is essentially the same Tripplite UPS monitoring software used in the IT world. There is no cart specific features or fleet management capabilities at this time.
